As another legislative session draws near and Texas prepares for some new additions at the Capitol, life is busy at Texans Care for Children. We want to provide you with an update on some of what is happening here, quick thoughts on some developments in the news, and the answer to where your weekly round-up of the news has been.
First, we are busily preparing for not only the legislative session, but also two back-to-back events coming in January: a Capitol summit on infant health and a day for you to join us at the Capitol, as we release a major new report on conditions for children in Texas. We hope you have already saved the date for January 24th and 25th!
Other preparations are happening, too. For instance, last month, we surveyed you to get ideas about how our communications could better keep you informed about children's issues and about when elected leaders need to hear from you. The feedback we got is guiding some changes for our email communications and for our blog. As we prepare for the shift, keep an eye on your email inbox box for an announcement (and be sure you are
on our list!) While we work on getting our new content in place, your weekly round-up of the news is on hold, but it will be returning in December. In the meantime, please check out our
Twitter feed, with all the latest on developments for children in Texas and nationally.
Finally, there is a lot of concern about one very bad idea that has surfaced in the news since we last wrote here: the notion of eliminating Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program in Texas. Together these programs not only provide health coverage for millions of Texas children, they are vital to our health care system and to the Texas economy. We hope you will join with us in calling on state leaders to begin talking about how to really improve our state's budget outlook: through a balanced approach to balancing the state's budget.
