Every other year, the Texas Legislature meets for less than five months and develops thousands of proposals for laws, many of which stand to impact children’s lives. Advocates for children and dedicated elected officials work hard to see that progress for the state’s children makes the agenda. Bills that could be harmful to children also surface, and Texans Care for Children fights to ensure such proposals never become law.
Over the years, we have been honored to be at the forefront of critical statewide work to reform child protective services and improve the state’s troubled juvenile justice system. We also have helped ensure that hundreds of thousands more children have health insurance and were instrumental in the creation of a statewide council to improve planning and coordination in children’s services. We make gains each session to improve mental health services for kids, as well as supports to children who have been removed from their parents’ care. We also are proud to see improvements in the quality and availability of healthy foods and physical activity for Texas kids, and the ongoing campaign to lift children out of poverty with basic supports, tax assistance, and more.
Texans Care for Children celebrates the broad and bipartisan cross-section of elected leaders who sponsor and pass dozens of laws each session to improve the lives of Texas children – actions that benefit thousands, even millions, of Texans every day. To learn more, see the PDF documents below.
