More Indicators that the Recession is Impacting Texas Kids - Friday, January 29, 2010
A handful of reports out this week highlight how the recession's impact may be acutely felt by Texas children and families. First, a new report from the Brookings Institution, identifies Texas as one of nine states where sharp increases in food assistance applications indicate child poverty might be climbing at an especially high rate. Nationally, 3.4 million more children received food assistance in 2009 compared to 2008, the report finds.

Additionally, a new report from the Dallas Morning News examines how the growing ranks of the newly uninsured are putting a toll on free health clinics, whose patient loads have skyrocketed since the recession began. In many places, the article notes, patient loads doubled between 2008 and 2009.
