We wanted to share directly word from two organizations, close to the federal action in Washington, so you can act today to support Texas children and families.
From the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, via our member, the Center for Public Policy Priorities, came this message on Tuesday, March 23, about funds that, in Texas, would ensure our state can continue crucial services to families during tough economic times, support local food banks, provide school supplies to 60,000 of our poorest children, and connect low-income youth with jobs:
URGENT ACTION needed on the TANF Emergency Fund Extension and Expansion
We have just learned that a provision extending the TANF Emergency Fund for one year and adding $2.5 billion for 2011 will be added to the small business jobs bill by action taken in the House Rules Committee today. The full bill will go to the House floor for a vote later this week...The bill is H.R. 4849 – The "Small Business and Infrastructure Jobs Tax Act of 2010.” The bill will (assuming it passes the House) go to the Senate which is not expected to take it up until after next week's recess.
This is great news. Now is a key opportunity to weigh in with your House members to urge their support for the small business jobs bill, including the TANF Emergency Fund extension... This is a good time to let your representatives know how important this extension is for your state.
Also, today the Senate Agriculture Committee sent the Child Nutrition Reauthorization bill, the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. Voices for America's Children asks that Texans ask their senators to support the bill, which provides new funding for school and after-school meals and other programs for children.
