Help Get Needed Dollars for Texas Schools and Services AND Curb Child Obesity
Tell the Senate Finance Committee Now to Support the $4 Billion Soda Tax Bill!
It's the biggest revenue-generating bill to get a hearing in years
and a proposal that could reverse child obesity, just as the cigarette
tax cut smoking. SB 1004 (Lucio), proposing a penny-per-ounce tax on
soft drinks, will be heard by the Senate Finance Committee this Monday
at 9 a.m. That's right, Texas legislators will be talking about this
important public health revenue bill on Tax Day—and they need to hear
from you!
We're seeking all hands on deck for this one: the best chance yet to help get Texas's fiscal house in order, while improving children's health. Texas taxpayers and businesses spend over $9.5 billion a year on obesity-related causes—a price the state comptroller says will triple by 2030. Let's do what will curb consumption of
the sugary drinks that may be the single biggest driver for obesity, especially in children, while securing needed funding for Texas.
What you can do:
Tell Members of the Senate Finance Committee to pass the soda bill out of committee!
If you can, come to the Capitol Monday morning for the 9:00 hearingto testify or put in a card of support. The hearing will be held in Room E1.036 (Finance Room).
If you can't be at the Capitol, contact the senators below to say, "Support SB 1004 to fight obesity and get needed funds for our state's priorities."
Is your senator on the list? Then be sure to say you're a constituent!
